Daffodils

gray skies always meet me at the gate and the grass glows a vibrant green the last gift of bodies long forgot and the mud is everywhere neat rectangles of freshly turned earth dragged onto the narrow paths by hesitant and grieving feet my own are steady and sure on a hill unbroken by recent death I stand a moment and breathe air that is clean and unashamed and the winter breeze rises to kiss my dry cheeks as I whisper words and turn to go but not before I feel a pang that the daffodils won't come til spring

My husband just left for military training. Two months as a wife, followed by two months alone again in a new apartment. I feel like writing again, so that's something to come out of this.

I wish I knew if there was someone else out there who turned to art during the separation...
